 Mental Illness Hits Small Business Owners Hard

While there is a growing(增加的) focus(关注) on mental health(心理健康) in theworkplace(工作场所), there are fewer(更少的) resources(资源) and support(支持) available(可获得的) to those running(经营) small businesses.

There are many reasons people choose to have their own business being their ownboss(老板), working on something they love, being able to set(安排) their own hours, or having some control(控制) over whom they work with. Yet(然而) thereality(现实) many small business owners(所有者) face is far less (远没有) attractive(有吸引力的) — financial stress(经济压力), long working hours andunclear boundaries(不清楚的界限) between work and family life. And all of thesefactors(因素) can have a huge impact(影响) on their mental health.

对于人们选择建立自己的事业,做自己的老板,做自己喜欢的事情,能够自己安排工作时间,或者能控制与谁一起工作,存在很多原因。然而,许多小企业主面临的现实远没有吸引力,经济压力,工作时间长,工作和家庭生活界限不清。所有这些因素都会对他们的心理健康产生巨大的影响。

Leanne Fawkner(本文主人公) is a business owner of an award-winning(获奖的) skin-care(护肤) range(系列产品). She knows very well the impact that a small business can have on, the mental health of its owner. When her successful businessstruggled(挣扎) due to(由于) the global financial crisis(全球金融危机), shesuffered(承受) a lot mentally. “As business slowed(放缓) , I was more and moreaffected(被影响的), ”she says. “ I couldn’t separate(与…分开) myself from my business. It was the worst experience of my life. I could no longer(不再) go to work and was crying all day ”.

She saw a counselor (咨询师) for help and took part in(参加) a workplace mental healthpromotion program (提升项目). This program was designed for(为…设计) small tomedium(中型的) business owners.
